Nursing shortage poses a risk for not only patients but also for the nurses working under these conditions. One factor contributing to a shortage is that nurses’ stress levels are increasing because of insufficient staffing, which is reducing job satisfaction causing more nurses to leave the profession (Whitney, 2018). Other reasons include an aging population and nurses are near retirement age. Also, nursing schools do not have sufficient staff to allow all interested students to enroll in nursing programs (Whitney, 2018).According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the United States is projected to experience a shortage of Registered Nurses that is expected to intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for health care grows. A solution that the AACN has proposed for the issue of the nursing shortage is that nursing schools are forming strategic support to help expand student capacity. Also, the AACN wants to ensure that more seats are vacant for nursing students in the baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs to ensure training for future nurses.Whitney, S. (2018).
