Discussion Board: Brain Games

Instructions

For this week’s discussion, please watch the following video: Brain Games – Inattentional Blindness and Smooth Pursuit (2:31).

Discussion Prompt

It’s logical to think that you see whenever your eyes are open. But the reality is that attention plays a major role in visual perception. One of the primary reasons why you may fail to notice things like obvious bloopers in movies, for example, is a psychological phenomenon known as inattentional blindness.

When you focus hard on one thing, such as the actions of the main character in a film, you might not notice unexpected things entering your visual field. Can you think of situations in which inattentional blindness is highly likely to be a problem? Can you think of cases in which inattentional blindness would not have much of an impact?

Think about a time when you failed to notice something around you because your attention was focused elsewhere. If someone pointed it out, were you surprised that you hadn’t noticed it right away? Please provide a personal example of a time when you experienced inattentional blindness.
