Classmate discussion

For our final discussion post, we are to discuss something that surprised us or found fascinating in this class.

Well, there are two things that surprised me. One was some of the music that I had heard so much about, and fully expected to love, I really did not like. And two, was some of the artists who obviously had a profound effect on jazz that I had never heard of, like Maria Schneider or Michael Brecker. To add to that, were artists like Pat Metheny, who I would have thought had a bigger impact on jazz history were not even mentioned. But, I guess you cannot cover every artist of a subject like this in 7 modules.

After hearing so much about, and outright given copies of CDs by friends of artist like Thelonious Monk, early Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman. I really wanted to, and expected to like, but just did nothing for me.

Coming from a classic rock background, I had little exposure to jazz. Growing up in Philadelphia, which has a huge jazz culture, I am able to “Play catch-up” a little bit. We have a number of great Jazz focused venues like Ortliebs, the Blue note and Chris’s Jazz café. All of which have great talent on any given night.
