Write and discuss:

While a lot of the required readings for this course thus far dive into the importance of healthcare access and social determinants of health, I wanted to explore a new area. The Healthy People 2020 topic that has the most impact on the health of individuals, families, and the community is health-related quality of life (HRQOL) & well-being. This topic impacts all four overarching goals of Healthy People 2020 goals, demonstrating its importance on the health of individuals and communities as a whole.

While traditional medicine in the United States consists of prescription or nonprescription medications, it is also important to consider all physical and mental support needs to ensure a positive quality of life and overall positive health outcome. HRQOL is multidimensional and on the individual level includes self-reported physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning and related social determinant elements (CDC, 2018). A study examining HRQOL in individuals in various occupation groups looked at HRQOL factors of self-reported health, physical distress and mental frequency, activity limitations, and overall unhealth days, and found that a person’s occupation impacts their HRQOL (Shockey et al., 2017). Positive qualities of life correlate to other social determinants of health; for example, those with better well-being may develop more social relationships within their community and may be more physically active leading to more positive health benefits.

There are multiple methods to measure HRQOL, one is the CDC-HRQOL-4 also known as “Healthy Days,” which requires individuals to self-report four questions on their physical and mental health and if warranted, activity limitations (Slabaugh et al., 2017). The Healthy Days HRQOL survey can be used individually but those results can also be applied on a community and population level. Results from Healthy Days survey have been used to collect information to help guide public health policy, determine community needs, and support the importance of patient-reported assessments (Slabaugh et al., 2017).
