There is a belief that there is racial injustice in the United States. However, it does not mean it is true everywhere or in every profession. To try and combat this belief in the medical profession culture competencies was derived. The main goal of cultural competence is to inform medical professionals about out a person’s culture, values, and traditions. It is thought that cultural competence will enhance skills, knowledge, understanding, and communication. The belief is that it will decrease disparities of care to minorities or those that are of different cultural heritage (Heponiemi,2019).Patients must learn to trust a nurse or their doctor. Therefore, first impressions and knowledge about a person’s culture can aid or hinder care. Culture competence can help understand health beliefs such as some cultures believe that talking about a possible poor health outcome will cause that outcome to occur. Then there are health customs such as some cultures, family members play a role in health care decision making. Other problems can arise by no knowing certain Interpersonal customs. Once again, some cultures believe eye contact or physical touch will be expected in some cultures and inappropriate or offensive in others. Therefore, according to cultural competence this can all be avoided (Heponiemi,2019).

As a Registered nurse, and a medical professional for 20 plus years, culture competence is not actually used to this extent. What is used is dietary customs and religious customs. In the United States Medical professionals have a standard practice of care that is given to every patient. Diseases are treated the same and nurse do not play favorites to one race or another. In fact, the whole idea to say there is racism or injustice, or minority disparities in the medical profession highly offends me. Every person is treated the same. The only difference is insurances. Insurances dictate what medication and treatment can be given. If people are poor, and have terrible insurance like ACA, or no insurances, then they receive the least expensive treatments.   That part is what needs to change, not infusing cultural competence in the medical field.
