Introduction to Annotated Bibliographies

Overview

An annotated bibliography is a type of reference page. The purpose of annotations is to provide the reader with a summary and an evaluation of each source. This activity will introduce you to the basics of writing an annotated bibliography entry. You will be completing a full annotated bibliography during week 5 to help you prepare for your final essay that is due during week 8.

In this assignment, you will choose the topic for your final essay, and explain the differences and similarities between a regular reference page and an annotated bibliography.

Activity

Step 1: Select your topic.

  • Find a topic within the healthcare or nursing field for your final essay. It needs to be a controversial topic so that you can argue one side of the issue. There needs to be a clear opposing opinion so that you can include a counterargument in your essay.

Step 2: Review the guidelines on how to format an annotated bibliography.

Step 3: Create your proposal.

  • Write 2-3 paragraphs.
    • Include a proper title page according to APA 7 guidelines.
    • Identify the topic for your final essay. Explain why you have selected it. How is it relevant to today’s healthcare environment? How is it controversial?
    • Explain the differences and similarities between an annotated bibliography and a regular references page.
    • Explain how an annotated bibliography can help you prepare for your final essay due week 8.
  • All answers should be written in complete sentences and use APA (7th ed.) format when writing your responses. You MUST write in your own words. Do NOT copy word-for-word from sources you find online.
