The Importance of Water for a Blood Draw

Nurses are always presented with various difficult situations in their line of work. It can make the job more daunting, especially when faced with new circumstances that are out of our control. However, it is vital to take a step back to thoroughly assess the situation rather than attempting to tackle the problem with a head-on approach. For instance, it is not uncommon for nurses to encounter patients who refuse specific tasks, such as drinking water, that are crucial for a blood draw and improving health. A nurse may emphasize the benefits of the requested tasks for their patients to comply. In this case, we may utilize the advantages of drinking water to draw blood. When presenting the idea to the patient, it is crucial for the nurse to initially establish a therapeutic relationship, such as providing privacy and introducing oneself, since this makes the patient more receptive to any requests. The nurse should calmly explain the benefits of drinking water to draw blood while utilizing concise information in Layman’s terminology. One explanation we may give is that drinking water increases blood volume, making it considerably more manageable for the person drawing blood to locate and access the veins. Furthermore, dehydration thickens the blood and lowers blood pressure, which is detrimental to venipuncture. When blood thickens, it is more difficult for the phlebotomist to puncture the vein and draw blood. Lastly, it is crucial to stress the importance of maintaining hydration as an essential, daily habit for good health and physical and emotional well-being. At the end of the encounter, thank the patient and inquire if they require anything further.
