Historical Perspective of Consumer Technology ?Research Paper

Research Paper Assignment

Choose one of the following perspective options for your research topic. Follow the instructions listed for your chosen option.

Option 1: Historical Perspective of Consumer Technology

Watch the God’s Must Be Crazy movie.

I would like for you to watch this movie with Neil Postman’s Five things we need to know about technological change article in mind, and analyze and reflect how the movie illustrates the following points:

  • What is the price paid in the movie by the consumers for the technology?
  • Who are the winners and losers, and how do the winners attempt to persuade the losers that they are really winners?
  • What are the social and political prejudices embedded in this movie?
  • What are the long-lasting effects of the technology in the movie on that society?
  • How does the technology change the behaviors of the society?

You will be using the Writing Specifics instructions listed below. Please do not tell me about the movie, like a book report. I have seen this movie more times than I can count (probably could be in the movie!). I am interested in what you think the movie means to society and to yourself. How does this movie mirror today’s society with regards to consumer technology? You will be graded on your originality, analysis, and reflections. Please cite references for this paper, except for citing the movie- that is not necessary.

Option 2: Current Perspective of Consumer Technology

Choose a current (within the last 5 years) movie or documentary about – or involving – consumer technology. Write a synopsis of the movie. Do additional research about the technology and the consumer that the movie addresses. Some ideas of consumer technology can be the use of 3D Printers, medical technology, nutrition and farming technology, etc.

Be sure to answer these questions in your paper:

  • When and how was the technology developed?
  • Who was the technology specifically developed for and who is currently using the technology?
  • What are future expectations for this technology and how is it expected to benefit consumers?
  • What are the global applications of this technology for international consumers?

You will be using the Writing Specifics instructions listed below. You will be graded on your originality, analysis, and reflections. Please cite references for this paper, except for citing the movie- that is not necessary.

Option 3: Future Perspective of Consumer Technology

Watch the Transcendent Man movie about Ray Kurzweil.

I would like for you to watch this film keeping in mind all of the consumer technology readings and discussions we have had to this point. You can Google this movie~ several sites do allow you to stream this movie.

  • Write a summary of the movie as you interpret it.
  • Discuss the meaning of singularity. How could this idea affect the future consumer?
  • Several examples of society’s move towards singularity are presented in this film. Discuss two of the examples that resonate or intrigue you. Be sure to reference the persons and/or institutions behind the examples.
  • Using the ideas in the movie, discuss how consumer technology overall may look in the year 2035. Discuss a couple of specific consumer technology products and discuss how you expect these to function with the future consumer.
  • Finally, discuss your acceptance or rejection of the idea of singularity based on the positive or negative effects that you can foresee society dealing with in the future.

You will be using the Writing Specifics instructions listed below. You will be graded on your originality, analysis, and reflections. Please cite references for this paper, except for citing the movie- that is not necessary.

Research Paper Tips: Before writing your paper, review the APA Writing guide. Make sure to use Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double space formatting and create your paper in MS Word only. Be sure to proof read your work for continuity, content, grammar, punctuation and spelling before submitting. Submit to the Dropbox by the due date specified in the course schedule. Late work will not be accepted.

Research Specifics: Use a minimum of three credible resources for your research. Additional resources can be from the internet (both articles and video links), but do not use any Wiki resources of any kind as these are not considered credible resources.

Writing specifics: Be sure to write your paper using an Academic APA Writing style. This means to write using a third person style, not using first person referencing. Do not use “I” or “We” in the writing. Your paper should be no longer than 6 pages, including the Title page and Reference page, so the main body of the paper should not exceed 4 pages.

Structure your paper with the following sections:

Introduction: Create a topic sentence that summarizes your topic and explains the title of the paper. Flesh out the introduction with an overview of what your paper will cover. A good rule of thumb is to write one sentence for each section of your paper in your introduction.

Body of your paper: You can label this section as appropriate to your research and analysis of your findings on your topic. For instance you can label this section as Literature Review (or Findings) of Your Topic. You can have sub-topic areas in this section as appropriate to your topic. <See APA template for how to properly lay out your paper and the various sections.>

Next section of your paper: This area can be labeled as Conclusion. In this area you will conclude your findings on your topic and provide suggestions for further/future research. For instance if your paper covered the God’s movie, further research suggestions could involve looking at other cultures/societies, seeing how technology has impacted those consumers, and comparing the reactions of the consumers in the God’s movie to other cultures/societies. Another example if you covered the Transcendent Man movie could be to choose one of the future technologies (like AI’s) and studying the impact of this technology in any current situations (like the Japanese robots used for elder care).

Last section of your paper: This is the Reference section. Any resource that you directly quote, paraphrase from or reference in your paper will be included in the Reference section. Be sure to consult the APA handouts for the proper way to write this.
