Citing scholarly resources in your work is required throughout your program. Follow the instructions in the bullets below to direct you where to find resources on effective search strategies. This week, you will support your organizational ethics presentation using at least two sources. Share your chosen topic and the key words and search strategies you used with your peers so that you can review each other’s work and provide peer-to-peer feedback. Also, describe what you think are the most important search features when narrowing down topics in the databases and why.

The topic I chose for this week’s presentation is: Failing to Cooperate with Others. Citing appropriate and credible scholarly sources is vital when conducting research and writing for an academic or professional audience. According to the West Coast University (n.d.) research search tips, it is important to use keywords, subject headings, and correct language and terminology when searching for appropriate sources. Keywords are “natural language search terms” (West Coast University, n.d.) and subject headings are “the terminology that field-specific and information professionals use to describe ideas” (West Coast University, n.d.). When conducting my research, I used keywords and subject headings such as: cooperation in workplace, cooperation in nursing, teamwork and cooperating, importance of inter-personal collaboration, etc.. The most important features when narrowing down topics in the database are how relevant the information is to my assigned topic as well as how credible and up-to-date my sources are.

My chosen topic for this weeks ethical presentation is“Producing misleading services”. With plastic surgery and aesthetics becoming priority in health and well being to some people, there are so many new procedures and products on the market. The requirements for opening a business providing said services are few. There are no guidelines or monitoring agency regulating them. The misleading service I will be highlighting is the one regarding non invasive laser liposuction.

In order to support my scenario I needed sources that were current, obvious, and reliable. I needed sources that presented the services and sources that presented the medical facts regarding said services. I always search google by entering the keywords and subject heading with medical jargon following it with scholarly articles, peer reviewed or research. The subject heading language includes jargon that is specific to my field of study to generate the best of millions of results to choose from (West Coast University, n.d.). I also pick the websites that end in “.org”, “.edu”, and “.gov”. After browsing through and narrowing my search down I picked the articles that had supportive details for my points in my outline draft of my presentation.

Betty, the chief nursing officer, had to make a decision about buying 120 new hospital beds for patient rooms. After she interviewed nurse mangers at the units where the beds were going to be placed, Betty compiled her findings and decided to contact a well-known equipment company to obtain prices and contracts. The equipment company’s executive salesperson, Jim, discussed options at length with her and invited her and her significant other to an upcoming all-expenses-paid lavish retreat at a five-star hotel in Hawaii to see demonstrations of the beds and to hear a comprehensive sales pitch. Betty thought to herself, “We badly need some relaxation and stress relief. Hawaii would be so much fun. Would it be wrong for us to go?”

· If you were Betty, what would you do? Give your rationale. Justify your answer with an ethical framework—a theory, approach, or principle.

· Do you consider this situation a conflict of interest? Why or why not? Give your rationale.

· What policies, if any, should be in place regarding a scenario such as this one? Do you have any such policies in place at work for similar situations? Do such policies impact day-to-day activities in any way? Explain.

Although this is a very generous and tempting offer, if I were Betty I would professionally and kindly decline as this most defiantly could be considered a conflict of interest. According to Pozgar 2014, one of the expected values of the code of ethics for organizations directly states that ” Employees will avoid conflict of interest situations by not favoring one’s own interests over those of others, including the organization. (Pozgar, 2014). By accepting this offer, Betty is clearly being bribed by the specific company to select them for her health care needs. By accepting the offer, Betty would be demonstrating professional misconduct and favoritism due the personal gain she would receive which creates a direct conflict of interest. Most facilities have policies in place that require employees to consent to avoid engaging in situations such as this that propose a conflict of interest for the organization. Termination of employment is usually the result of participating in any form of organizational misconduct.

Based on the scenario presented above, if I were Betty, I would politely decline the invitation. It certainly would be nice to go on a Hawaiian vacation but not at the expense of the company or organization. Betty is in a position of power. The idea of going on an all-expense paid lavish retreat is very appealing but ultimately the goal of the salesman is to secure a deal with the hospital. Betty being a chief nurse officer should not use her occupation and power for personal enrichment also known as occupational fraud and abuse. Another ethical issue presented here is the potential for corruption in that Betty may use her influence in a manner that violates the employer for personal gain and is a conflict of interest (Butts, 2015).

I consider this a conflict of interest because Betty who is in a position of power and has an association with the hospital is in a situation in which she will receive personal gain from this sale and is taking advantage of the employer to reap its benefits.

The hospitals and other facilities that I have worked with had such policies in place to prevent occupational abuse and corruption. One reporting hotline that my facility has is the “whistleblower” hotline in which staff can report misconduct and a committee is able to review and investigate such matters. Such policies impact day to day activities in that hospital staff is instructed not to receive monetary gifts from patients and/or families. Patients and families are advised to provide in the form of donations to the hospital itself or shareable gifts (usually donuts or food items) that the entire unit staff can appreciate.
