Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will apply the principles of cultural responsiveness by designing patient education materials that reflect the values, beliefs, and communication preferences of a specific cultural group. Your goal is to create a resource that is accessible, respectful, and relevant to the chosen population’s health needs. You will also identify appropriate communicationstrategies to support understanding and engagement, ensuring the material promotes both health literacy and cultural sensitivity. This activity encourages you to think critically about how nurses can deliver inclusive care through effective, personalized education. Be sure to follow the grading rubric when developing your Culturally Tailored Patient Education assignment.

 

Instructions:

You will select a cultural group of interest and develop an original patient education tool tailored to that group’s unique health beliefs, communication preferences, and learning needs. This resource should be designed to promote understanding of a health condition, preventive practice, or treatment plan in a culturally respectful way.

  • Your holistic patient education tool should include:

    • Clearly identify the cultural group and health topic being addressed
  •  
    • Include visuals, language, and examples that are culturally appropriate and accessible
  •  
    • Demonstrate health literacy principles (e.g., plain language, readability, clarity)
  •  
    • Highlight non-verbal and verbal communication considerations for patient interactions
  •  
    • Include a brief rationale (250–350 words) explaining the purpose and design of your patient education tool. Describe why you selected the specific format, language, visuals, and communication strategies for the chosen cultural group and health topic. Your rationale should connect these design choices to course concepts such as cultural humility, health equity, culturally responsive communication, and health literacy, and explain how the tool supports patient understanding and engagement. Support your rationale with at least two recent (2019–2025) peer-reviewed journal sources in APA 7th edition format that informed your approach to culturally appropriate patient education.
  • You are encouraged to be creative! Choose a format that fits the patient population and your teaching strengths—options may include:
