Illegal dumping is a huge problem in my area. I live in a town surrounded by desert. Indigenous and derelict people seem to think dumping waste and personal belongings in remote areas of the desert will not affect the environment. Either that or they just don’t care. My bet is on the latter. Hazardous waste from oil and battery fluid can get into the soil. Subsequently, nearby wells can be contaminated. Some homes in the area depend on wells for their everyday water supply. The county levies heavy fines for illegal dumping. Unfortunately, in such a remote area it is hard to catch or track down the perpetrators. Also there are no cameras around. Border patrol goes in those areas but the environment is not their primary concern. I am not sure what to do to alleviate this problem. So far, volunteers roam around looking for trash when there is a bulk trash pick up day. It helps but it is not a permanent solution to a continuous problem. I guess we will have to start small.

The environmental impact of Hurricane Michael wiped out most all the timber and trees across the Northeast Florida Panhandle area. This storm roared across Florida a little over a year ago, bringing inches upon inches of rain , soaking landscape that had already seen more than its share of precipitations months before. The damage trees were no longer able to take up water in the natural process, in which nourishes the tree from the root to its branches than leaves. This process also contribute to exacerbating flooding issues. Most landfalls lack proper on-site waste management, therefore, contributing to additional threats to the environment. In the long term, landfills leak and pollute ground water make waste management difficult and give off potentially unsafe gases. The gases are due to waste eventually rotting and creating a methane gas which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. There are many ways of slowing down this process but due to many individuals not taking Go Green seriously, we will never see this problem disposed of.
