IT-Energy and Power

Lab Assignment 7 (Case Study 7):

(IT 52 Electricity and Electronics Class; Professor Mahalik)

Development of skills to train others in technical areas such as “Energy and Power”

In this Lab Assignment (LA) you will develop skill to teach others. The topic will be around Energy and Power.

To Do

Prepare a PowerPoint File on the topic “Energy and Power”. Consider the following when preparing the PowerPoint/Microsoft Word file.

1. The first slide (first slide) must have the title of the Topic i.e., Energy and Power.

2. The second slide should have listed the sub-topics under the slide title Outline.

3. The following slides should have the contents of the sub-topics listed in the Outline. Each sub-topic should have multiple slides (see the Sample)

4. The file must have a Summary or Conclusion slide.

5. The file should have 5-10 questions at the end.

6. The file should have at least 10 slides excluding first slide, Outline slide, and Conclusion slide.

7. The text size should be at least 16. The text size for the Title can be 24-30 bold.

8. The total word count of the file (whether PowerPoint or MicroSoft Word) must be at least 500 Words.

9. The file should have Figures and Tables (if needed).

NOTES: See attached Sample [Note: In the Sample the topic is Nonotechnology, however, your topic in the Lab Assignment is Energy and Power!]. You may use the Template file that is uploaded to the Blackboard. It is your responsibility to know how to use PowerPoint for development of PowerPoint slides for this Assignment. If you, however, do not know how to use PowerPoint, you can prepare the same using Microsoft Word (MS Word) application in MS Windows platform.

Turn in the file in PPT format or MS Word format. To stay on safe side, you may convert the PPT to PDF and turn in both the formats (PPT and PDF).

Please do not turn in a blank file!

What is Nanotechnology ?

Nanotechnology is

defined as the fabrication of devices on atomic or molecular scale precisions.

Devices with feature sizes less than 100nm are considered to be products of nanotechnology. It is defined as the application of nano structure into useful nano scale devices

*

Another way of thinking about the ultimate form of nanotechnology, is that it will be based upon molecular machinery – machines made by having every atom in a designed place and performing a designed function. These molecular machines will be capable of making other molecular machines and other products in which the atomic structure is precisely arranged to make the desired product. These molecular machines that will be able to assemble atoms into complex structures have been termed “assemblers.”

MOLECULAR ASSEMBLER

  • The fundamental purpose of an assembler is to position atoms.
  • Assemblers will be molecular machines that direct chemical bonding processes through the manipulation of reactive molecules

NANOROBOTS

A Nan robot is a specialized nanomachine designed to perform a specific task or tasks reapedly and with precision ,and have dimensions on the order of nanometers

Nanorobots, like their larger counter parts can be characterized into two groups:

  • Autonomous robots
  • Insect robots

Applications of Nano technology

  • Computer technology
  • Nano biology
  • Nano medicine
  • Nano technology-Ecology
  • Nano technology-Natural resources
  • Nano weapons
  • Nanotechnology-space

*

COMPUTER AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES

We can minimize the size of chips and Instead of silicon cells carbon cells can be used.

By assembling these cells using Nano technology, minute transistors, phones can be manufactured.

The size of the computer can be minimized even smaller than that of the Red blood cells of the human body. Minute robots can be developed for applications in various fields.

*

The usage of Nano technology in agriculture, aquaculture, environment, sericulture, etc; can be named as Nano-biology. Biochemical reactions in organisms can be controlled using Nano technology.

*

NANOMEDICINE

  • Nano machines and robots, can be replaced in the place of medicines in human body.,
  • Minute robots can repair the human body with out the requirement of any operation.
  • Medicines can be placed in right position without affecting other healthy cells.
  • Chemicals and radiations can destroy the healthy cells in a cancer patient, which can be eradicated using this technology.

*

Environment can be protected using Nano technology. Indivisible materials can be made divisible. Nuclear wastes can be refined. Plastics made using Nano technology can easily be degraded in environment. Environmental free products can be produced using Nano technology.

Weapons, which are lighter, perfect, harder than the present weapons, can be made using the Nano technology.

NANOWEAPONS

NANOCLOTHES-using nanotechnology we can make clothes which make us almost invisible as the clothes change according to the environment

Shoes made of nanotechnology make us fly.

  • The weight of the satellites can be minimized using devices made of Nano technology.
  • For example a satellite weighing 16000 kilograms can be minimized upto3.54 kgs.
  • Materials which can tolerate high temperatures can be placed in the rockets carrying satellites.
  • Now a day, tests are being conducted to design a ladder for sending satellites into space.

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN SPACE

*

FROS AND CONS

  • The control of the minute devices made of Nano technology is difficult.
  •     Robots prepared by this technology may overcome the human beings with its vital powers. Over the man who designed it.
  •   If weapons are made using Nano technology we can’t even imagine the situation where Atomic and biochemical weapons are causing a huge destruction..
  • New laws are to be implemented to regulate the products of this technology.

*

CONCLUSION

Nanotechnology offers the ability to build large numbers of products that are incredibly powerful by today’s standards. This possibility creates both opportunity and risk. The problem of minimizing the risk is not simple; excessive restriction creates black markets, which in this context implies unrestricted nanofabrication .
