Assignment Overview

In this portion of the journal, you will focus on how personal biases may influence your ability to provide holistic care that meets patients’ physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Reflect on a clinical situation or personal experience where bias—conscious or unconscious—may have impacted patient communication, trust, or care decisions. Consider how greater self-awareness and cultural humility could improve your ability to deliver more inclusive, compassionate nursing care. Use at least three (3) peer reviewed scholarly resources to support your reflections and connect your insights to principles of holistic practice.

Instructions

  • Reflect on a time in clinical practice when you struggled—or succeeded—in providing care that addressed a patient’s full range of needs (physical, emotional, social, spiritual).
  •  
    • What were the cultural factors at play?
  •  
    • How did your personal beliefs or assumptions influence the care you provided?
  • Identify a situation where bias (conscious or unconscious) may have shaped your perception of a patient or family.
  •  
    • How might that bias have impacted your communication, tone, or body language?
  •  
    • Did this affect your ability to deliver truly holistic care?
  • Consider your spiritual, cultural, or social values.
  •  
    • How do these values support or hinder your understanding of others’ needs?
  •  
    • What steps can you take to honor beliefs and practices that differ from your own in future nursing care?

Guidelines

  • Must include a properly formatted APA 7th Edition STUDENT Title Page (includes page numbers; NO running head).
  • Your submission should be a minimum of 2 pages no more than 3 pages (this does NOT include the title page and reference page).
  • Must include 3 scholarly references to support your paper; ONE (1) from this week’s reading,  and TWO (2) from professional peer-reviewed journals published within the past seven (7) years (must be credible).
  • APA 7th Edition documents should be double-spaced, including the reference page. 
  • Must use Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri 12-pt font with 1-inch margins
