Think about the ways we describe illness, through stories, metaphors, or even casual phrases like “fighting cancer†or “a silent killer.†In this module, we looked at how narrative and figurative language can shape how illness is experienced, understood, and even stigmatized.
Using examples from Cutting for Stone, Susan Sontag’s Illness as Metaphor, or Rita Charon’s work on narrative medicine, reflect on the following:

- Have you ever heard a metaphor or phrase used to describe illness that made you feel inspired, uncomfortable, or confused? Why?
- How can healthcare providers (or even public health campaigns) use language more responsibly to reduce stigma around illness?
- In Cutting for Stone, how does storytelling impact how we view the characters’ experiences with illness and healing?
- Can metaphors like “battle†or “journey†be helpful in some cases? When might they be harmful?
