Assignment Overview

Nurses are powerful voices for change. In this project, you will advocate for a policy change, community initiative, or clinical improvement that addresses a health equity issue affecting a vulnerable or underserved population. Drawing on your understanding of diversity, ethics, and social determinants of health (SDOH), you will use evidence-based research and culturally responsive communication to recommend a solution.

This assignment helps you strengthen your professional voice, practice nursing advocacy, and connect ethics to real-world equity issues.

Guidelines

Choose Your Focus

Select one health equity issue relevant to your community or nursing practice area.Examples include:

  • Lack of prenatal access in rural counties
  • High maternal mortality among Black women
  • Food insecurity or homelessness
  • Barriers for non-English-speaking patients
  • Limited mental health services for veterans or teens

Research the Issue

Use at least three (3) current peer-reviewed sources (≤7 years) and one credible policy or agency source (e.g., CDC, WHO, AHA, HRSA).Explain:

  • Who is affected
  • What SDOH contribute
  • What policies, laws, or systems impact access or outcomes

Develop Your Advocacy Proposal

Clearly state your policy change, initiative, or improvement and justify it with ethical reasoning and evidence.Be specific: What change do you want to see? Who can make it happen? Why is it needed?

Select Your Format

Choose one format that fits your advocacy style:

  • Advocacy Video (5–7 min) with speaker notes and reference page
  • Editorial / Op-Ed (two (2)- three (3) pages) (title and reference pages not included)
  • Slide Presentation (6-8 slides) with speaker notes (title and reference slides not included)

Integrate Diversity & Ethics

  • Address how diversity, culture, and ethics influence your advocacy.
  • Show cultural humility and inclusive communication in your message.

Formatting

  • Please include a properly formatted APA 7th Edition STUDENT Title Page 
  • Minimum of three (3) references, one (1) from this week’s reading, and two (2) from professional peer-reviewed journals published within the past seven (7) years and you may use governmental websites (.gov).
  • You must submit a written copy of your Advocacy Video and Slide Presentation speaker notes and references. 
  • APA 7th edition reference page.
