Write and discuss below:

After having the opportunity to review the information from previous posts as well as the background reading, it seems evident that depending on the circumstances, certain study designs are better for some research areas than others.

For the three research areas discussed in the initial post, the case control study design seems best for Area #1 as it is a viable option for assessing only one outcome (Thiese, 2014). A study design that seems appropriate for Area #2 is the cohort study as it has the ability to assess multiple exposures (Thiese, 2014). Finally, the study design best suited for Area #3 is either the cross sectional or the cohort design as both studies can  assess multiple outcomes (Thiese, 2014).

One of the limitations of the case control study is that it is used best for rare diseases and it doesn’t necessarily yield the most accurate evidence (Martin, 2013). However, the design can assess multiple exposures and is cheap to conduct (Martin, 2013). Cohort studies are also used to assess rare exposure, but are limited to one and can be pretty expensive to perform (Martin, 2013). However, the ability to assess multiple outcomes leaves room for more accurate and dependable results (Martin, 2013). Lastly, while cross sectional studies are inexpensive and can assess multiple outcomes, they are often timely and a poor choice for short term diseases (Thiese, 2014).

Although it was challenging to match these study designs with specific areas of research, I look forward to learning the ins and outs of selecting the designs that are best suited for a specific set of circumstances.
