Essay (EY): 7–10 pages; to be argumentative on an issue discussed in class; Abstract & Bibliography (AB) required for approval prior to writing.

As was specified in the syllabus from the beginning, everyone is
required to submit “A + B” (Abstract & Bibliography) to earn an
approval for the essay topic. It can be met by submitting an 1-page
plan for the essay, which is comprised of the following 2 items:

(1) Abstract:

1-paragraph description of your “intended” argument
on a chosen topic along with the “title” of essay

(2) Bibliography:

list of reference materials

The 1-page “A + B” is not assigned any credit points in and of
itself; but you should get an approval by submitting it; otherwise,
your essay will NOT be considered as “legitimate,” thereby getting
no credit from your essay.

The idea is not to limit your freedom of choices but to make sure
that your work will not fall into improper terrain, so that your
efforts will not be in vain. It will be quite liberal enough that
as long as you demonstrate “relevancy” of your topic to what we’ve
studied, you shall be granted an approval.

You’re advised to review all the questions we have touched upon,
and to articulate an issue or question based on something that
you’ve found most interesting, and to “argue for” your own position
by mustering your own forces of ideas and thoughts. Of course, you
should incorporate what we’ve studied in the course; but also,
given that no idea is an island totally detached from all the rest,
at least some minimal amount of references (footnotes) should be
part of your essay.

Certainly it is “not” a statement of commitment on the essay topic,
as it could evolve or might develop some changes (in which case,
you should consult with me immediately); but at least, you should
be able to show your instructor what it is that you’re interested
enough to write an essay on. Again, it is a requirement, as well as
an assurance, for you to be confirmed that your essay is on the
“correct” path to earn the credit points.
