Two leadership theories, trait theory developed by Gordon Alport in 1936 (Whitney,2018) and the servant leadership theory described by Robert Greenfield in 1970 (Whitney,2018) will be discussed. Trait leadership theory sees individuals as having innate leadership abilities based on certain characteristics such as demographics, personality, intelligence, physiologic attributes. Thus, individuals who are always leading others, possessing charisma and an emotional maturity are seen as natural born leaders based on this theory. Servant leadership theory on the other hand does not see individuals as having any innate leadership abilities, but rather that through serving others, one can then know how to lead (Whitney,2018). This theory unlike trait theory involves an individual emulating the behavior of Christ by being nonjudgmental, patient, tactful and possessing the willingness to listen thus equipping them to be effective leaders.

The strengths of both theories are that they are both positive, effective and practical in being implemented in nursing practice. An individual with innate traits of leadership as well as someone who is of a Christlike demeanor is essential to nursing practice as it takes someone with a “knack” of leadership but an unassuming character to be gentle at the same time in carrying out their duties. Additionally, trait theory can be adopted into nursing practice as it is seen as a valid theory based on extensive research done (Management Study Guide, n.d.). However, trait theory’s weakness to nursing practice is that an individual can be overly self involved with their so called inborn abilities not recognizing those abilities need to be developed and matured and how to properly utilize them to be most effective. Servant leadership theory weakness in nursing practice, lies in the fact that, the nurse leader can be seen as a type of doormat in which other more assertive individuals may overshadow them. Likewise, persons of different religions may not want to adopt a theory based on religious (Christian) background or foundation.
