Week 1 – Assignment: Review Classical Theories through a Systemic Lens Assignment

Instructions

After completing this week’s readings, write a reflective paper that considers the classic theories of development through a systems-based perspective. Include in your paper the following (use the bolded words as headers to organize your paper):

  • Assimilation, Accommodation, and Schemas. Consider Piaget’s concepts of assimilation and accommodation. What stages in Satir’s model accounts for these schemas?
  • Developmental Transitions. What does the Satir video add to your understanding about developmental transitions in Freud and Erikson’s models?
  • Epistemological Lens. How does understanding Bateson’s notion of an “epistemological lens” help to make you a better therapist?
  • Life Span Development. Use the concepts from the Baltes article to discuss the various characteristics of life span development.
  • Compare and Contrast General Societal Messages. Using Bateson’s notion of an “epistemological lens,” compare and contrast the general societal messages about the meaning of going to therapy with your own beliefs.
  • Stages of Change in Action. Offer an example from your own life that demonstrates Satir’s stages of change in action.
  • Importance to MFTs. Address how and why developmental theory in general is important to the work we do as MFTs.

Length: 3-5 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
